Racconigi: Birth of an asylum

The foundation of the asylum of Racconigi (1871)

Founded in 1871, the asylum has been for over Racconigi a century the hospital of 'mad' for the whole province of Cuneo. The book, an example of how local history can tell us much of a phenomenon as a whole, offers today's readers not only a critical reading of the events that led to the opening of the hospital psychiatrists, but also original documents of great interest allow a direct view on society and the medical culture of the time. It follows that an insane asylum, from the moment of its foundation and with the full knowledge of those who wanted to set up, stood halfway between prison and forced psychiatric treatment. Despite the limitations of the model kindergartens, well known even then, by doctors and provincial administrators, there was the decided to opt for rejection of alternative practices, surprisingly widespread in the nineteenth century in Europe. The most obvious strength of the story lies in racconigese extraordinary relevance of the issues involved, proposing a distance of one hundred and forty years in subjects far from pacified social debate in the medical and in our consciences.

Massimo Moraglia works at the Department of History at the University of Turin and it deals with history of psychiatric care in contemporary times. Among his books, Building asylum. History of the Psychiatric Hospital of Grugliasco (Unicopli, Milan 2002).

Gazzera Joseph is director of the Department of Mental Health ASL-17 were in Saluzzo-Savigliano and coordinator of the Interdepartmental Centre for the Study of Psychiatry Dsm of the province of Cuneo.

Sergio Tesio is responsible for nursing service in the Territorial District of ASL 17 and Savigliano Fossano and contract professor of Cultural Anthropology at the School of Nursing, University of Turin.

Alessandro Vallarino is medical director at the Department of Mental Health ASL-17 were in Saluzzo-Savigliano.
